Weymouth Museum’s fifth ‘Teas and Talks’ of the autumn welcomes Richard Clammer to talk about ‘Cosens of Weymouth and their famous paddle steamers’.
Richard will talk about:
For over 100 years, the paddle steamers belonging to Cosens & Company were a familiar sight in Weymouth Harbour and all along the south coast of England. Best remembered for their summer excursion sailings, the steamers were also involved in towage, dramatic salvage work, servicing the naval fleets in Portland Harbour and wartime minesweeping. Cosens, at one time Weymouth’s largest employer, also operated a major engineering and ship-repairing business and was involved in the coal, diving and block ice trades. Richard will cover the history of Cousens as a major employer in the town.About Richard:
Richard grew up in Weymouth, attended the Grammar School, and, when not sailing in the Bay, spent many hours on board the local paddle steamers or serving as a student deck hand on various Channel Islands ferries. He is the author of the two-volume history “Cosens of Weymouth” as well as a number of other maritime history books and numerous articles. He has been actively involved with paddle steamer preservation for many years and has a continuing, active interest in the history of Weymouth Harbour and its shipping.About the event:
