As part of the ”Weymouth 450“celebrations, on 21st August at St Mary’s Church, Weymouth, at 7.30pm, the Thomas Fowell Buxton Society, with generous support of Weymouth Town Council, are presenting “Music of the Elizabethan Age”.
Musicians Duncan Honeybourne, May Robertson, Dimity Shorrock and Alex Campbell will present an exploration into the Elizabethan musical world.
Weymouth born, Duncan Honeybourne, the founder and artistic director of the Weymouth Lunchtime Concerts, will play harpsichord music by John Playford, William Byrd and West countryman, John Bull. On the night the harpsichord will be an instrument built and loaned by leading harpsichord maker, Peter Barnes.
May Robertson, violin, is a medieval music specialist and has performed in frequent broadcasts on BBC 3’s “In Tune”. May and Duncan will play music by Elizabethan composers and improvise on Tudor melodies, madrigals and folk songs

Sixteen year old Dimity Shorrock studies the recorder at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. She will be singing pieces by John Dowland and the famous madrigal “The Silver Swan” by English composer, Orlando Gibbons.Support for Dimity on John Dowland’s and Orlando Gibbons’s songs is provided by lutenist Alex Campbell. Alex plays, Renaissance Lute, Guitar and Baroque guitar.
As well as accompanying Dimity, Alex has Lute solos of pieces by Guiseppi Antonio Doni and Francis Cutting.
Dorset music lovers should find this a fascinating and unusual programme, as we emerge from Covid 19 restrictions.
Tickets are priced at £12, Senior Citizen tickets at £10 and £6 for children. There is a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink at the interval.
