Weymouth Museum’s third ‘Teas and Talks’ of the Autumn welcomes Stuart Morris to talk about ‘Piers and Pavilions’.
Stuart will talk about:
The long and fascinating story of the two Weymouth Pavilions of 1908 and 1960, and the Piers alongside the historic harbour. Centuries of development of the Pile Pier, built for Pleasure and Commerce, and the Stone Pier breakwater. The rise and demise of Weymouth’s Quay Tramway. A new lease of life for Weymouth’s Pavilion Theatre for the 21st century.About Stuart:
Stuart Morris was born on Portland in 1942, and his roots on the Island go back many generations. His interest in Portland’s history was fostered by the discovery of his family’s involvement with quarrying, the Breakwater, fishing, and even smuggling. For 12 years, Stuart represented Portland on the Dorset County Council and was (and is) an ardent campaigner for the local environment. He is a past Portland Town Mayor. He had a successful career in civil engineering. He was the Project Manager for many schemes in this area, ranging from coast protection works (Stage 3) at Chesil, to Weymouth’s Town Centre Traffic Management and Pedestrianisation schemes, and for the Trinity Road/Hope Square (Brewers Quay) enhancement project. From 1991, he was the Highways Agency Manager for the local Borough Council, retiring in 2000. Stuart was a founder member of the Portland Field Research Group and the Isle of Portland Heritage Trust, and he is a patron of the Royal Manor Workshops. He has written a number of books.About the event:
