Weymouth Museum is delighted to present the first in the 2025 programme of public talks on Friday 27th June, 7:30 pm at Pilgrim House, Hope Square, Weymouth.
In this richly illustrated talk, Allan will cover Weymouth’s illustrious history as a seaside resort, from 1748 and the rise of sea bathing, through King George III’s patronage of the town, and the growth of the resort during the Georgian and Victorian periods. Allan considers Weymouth’s colourful architectural heritage and how the town was transformed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Tickets are available to book online and are £2.50 for Friends of Weymouth Museum members and £5.00 for visitors.
Doors open at 7:00 pm. Light refreshments are included. All are welcome to attend.
Dr Allan Brodie is a visiting fellow at Bournemouth University and a founding member of the Seaside Heritage Network. He is the author of England’s Seaside Resorts (2007), The Seafront (2018) and England’s Seaside Heritage from the Air (2021), as well as books on Margate (2007), Weymouth (2008), Blackpool (2014) and Weston-super-Mare (2019). He has also co-written a four-volume history of Travel and Tourism 1700-1914 (2014) and Tourism and the Changing Face of the British Isles (2019). Other books have included studies of England’s prisons, England’s military heritage and a catalogue of medieval stone sculpture in Salisbury Museum.
