A visit to Upwey Village is a visit back to a time when it was Weymouth’s premier tourist attraction and charabancs used to regularly bring holiday makers from the seafront to the village to taste the waters in the Wishing Well and enjoy tea in the tea gardens that were at that time popular in the village.

These days you won’t get a charabanc but there is a bus service running quite regularly that will take you to the outskirts of the village from Weymouth town centre and another that runs mornings only that will take you to the heart of the village. It’s only about 5 miles out of town on the route to Dorchester but if you’re coming from the Weymouth direction make sure you leave the relief road where Upwey is signposted at Manor Road roundabout as although it passes with 100 metres or so of the village their is no turning into the village when travelling north.

If you’re coming for the Dorchester direction though no problem just look out for the slip road into the village as you travel down the Ridgeway towards Weymouth. Definitely within cycling distance of both Weymouth and Dorchester and if you should choose to drive the good news is that there are few parking restrictions in the village and probably the cheapest car park in the area at St Lawrence Church which is open to the public at all times when services are not taking place and only costs 50p a stay !!!

There are two pubs in the village , The Old Ship Inn and The Royal Standard both of which have good reputations for good food and real ale, the latter actually brewing it’s own! Upwey Wishing Well is open to the public and has beautiful gardens to explore along with the well it’s self and is the one remaining tea room in the village. St Lawrence Church in the village is definitely worth popping into for a look around, parts of the tower go back to the 12th century and internally there are some superb murals on the walls. Take a circular walking tour around the village and you’ll be able to drop into Island Garden Nurseries as well as admire architecture that ranges from quaint thatched cottages to to stylish country houses dating back from a few centuries ago to the modern day.
