The Museum is a “Community Project” (so, it’s FREE Entry but unfunded, so welcomes voluntary donations) started in 2014 by retired Prison Officer John Hutton and is packed with Artefacts, Memorabilia and Documents about the Portland Prison from 1848 to 1988. The Museum is staffed by Volunteers and tells the fascinating story of Convict Labour building the Portland Breakwater and working the Admiralty Quarries, how the establishment converted to a Juvenile Prison in 1921 and became Portland Borstal for sixty years.
