Following the publication of her oral history book about the seine fishing traditions along Chesil Beach, this talk with Q&A brings alive the ancient traditions of seining communities in Dorset and the lerret (wooden fishing boat used along Chesil) with readings from the book, observations and photos. Audience members are encouraged to join in with their own stories or memories, and discuss any wider themes.
Sarah Acton is a poet, oral history writer and community theatre writer. Sarah delivers creative arts and writing engagement projects for organisations, museums and community groups and she writes with a focus on connection to nature, seasons and place. Sarah is the writer and co-founder of the Heart of Stone community play project on Portland supported by Arts Council England, poet on the Your Seasons of Story project through Stepping into Nature and Dorset AONB.
Signed copies of the book will be available to buy at the talk. Several co-authors and many people contributed voices, memories, stories and time to make this book possible, it is a celebration of Chesil beach, and tribute to all of the folk who have seined and lived along its shores.
The talk will be held in Hope United Reformed Church at 8 Trinity Street. Tea & biscuits will be served from 2pm and the talk will begin at 2.30pm.
Tickets will be available on the door and are £2.00 for members of the Friends and £3.00 for visitors. (Exact change would be appreciated, if possible).
