Join writer Sarah Acton in-conversation with former Portland Quarrymen, Trevor Mccolm and Rab Stone. They will be remembering working life in the Portland quarries pre-mechanisation, traditions of the Portland stone industry and its people. There will also be photos and Q&A.
Trevor and Rab are Portlanders and remember life shaped by quarrying days, tight-knit local quarry crews, and the elements. They have been talking to Sarah for the last six years to share their stories more widely and support research and documentation of Portland stone, communities and local traditions.
Sarah Acton is a poet, oral history writer and community theatre-maker. Sarah delivers creative arts and writing engagement projects for organisations, museums and communities and writes with a focus on connection to nature, seasons and place. Sarah created the Heart of Stone community project 2019-2022 and founded Portland Players on Portland supported by Arts Council England, writing two plays called Heart of Stone, followed by Caught in the Net, a new play about Dorset mackerel with music and dance. Sarah is author of Seining Along Chesil (Little Toller, 2022).
The talk will be held in Hope United Reformed Church at 8 Trinity Street. Tea & biscuits will be served from 2pm and the talk will begin at 2.30pm.
Tickets will be available on the door and are £2.00 for members of the Friends and £3.00 for visitors. (Exact change would be appreciated, if possible).
