In a last-minute change to our published schedule, Graham Perry, Chair of the Friends of Weymouth Museum will give a presentation on the great storm that wreaked havoc across the southwest of England two hundred years ago this month.
The storm swept away the village of Fleet and devastated Chiswell leaving many dead and over 200 hundred homeless. Weymouth Esplanade, ‘the pride of Melcombe’, was almost completely destroyed.
The talk will also look briefly at the history of storms in Weymouth and question whether the 1824 storm was really as exceptional as is sometimes claimed.
The talk will be held in Hope United Reformed Church at 8 Trinity Street. Doors open at 2.00 pm and the talk will start at 2.30pm.
Tickets will be available on the door and are £2.00 for members of the Friends and £3.00 for visitors. (Exact change would be appreciated, if possible).
