Collecting Memories

On Saturday 6th November, Context One, Heritage & Archaeology, the fantastic company who carried out this summer’s exciting archaeological excavations on the old Weymouth High Street site, in conjunction with the local heritage group, Dig The Street, will be holding a day to celebrate and remember Weymouth’s much lamented old High Street & its surrounding areas at the Old Town Hall.

We are asking any old residents of the street and area, or anyone with memories, stories and legends about it, to come in and, if they want to be, be recorded for an archive which will be handed down to future generations as a living memory of times gone by.

We want to hear about the characters that lived there, the pubs, the shops, the stories and the legends ….. Legends of tunnels etc which are said to exist under the ruins of some of the houses and to run under the street to various other parts of the town, dating back to civil war and smuggling times.

Some say there is a tunnel to the Nothe Fort … others, that there is one which runs all the way to Sandsfoot Castle !
In short, anything that present and future generations will love to hear about.

As well as an exhibition showing new photos of the street, there will also be a detailed exhibition about what was found when we excavated the street and also news about upcoming archaeological digs in the town.

So please, come along. All are welcome, whether you want to tell your story, or just listen and see the exhibition.

If we forget who we are, we lose our identity as a community. Weymouth has such a proud history … let’s keep it ALIVE !!
