Weymouth Museum is telling the story of football in Weymouth and how it went from small clubs in districts and companies to the Terras at the Bob Lucas Stadium today. On display are football shirts through the ages, trophies from the Club, photos of teams old and new, and programmes of significant matches. Do you remember when Manchester United came to town for the opening of the new stadium?

Even if you’re not a football fan, you’ll be fascinated by the story of Pat Dunn. She was the first female official football referee and came from Weymouth. Her story is told through the letters of rejection from the Football Association and her ultimate triumph when she was accepted in 1976 and registered as an official referee for both men’s and women’s matches.

On show is memorabilia from the Women’s World Cup in 1971 in Mexico, when Pat acted as Coach to the English team. This was declared to be an unofficial tournament, and it has never been accepted by official bodies.

You can also discover teams such as the Weymaids, the Whitehead Torpedo Works teams (both men and women), and local teams from Wyke Regis and Westham. Football boots from Dinky Curtis, who played for Dorchester but came from Weymouth, are on show, along with collections of football shirts from Kenny Legg and Tony Prowse.

The Museum would also like to record people’s memories of playing or watching football in Weymouth. If you have a story to tell, please get in touch.
The exhibition is open 10am to 2pm, Tuesday to Friday, plus 10.30 to 1.30 on Mondays and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.
