Weymouth is officially celebrating after receiving the prestigious Purple Flag Award for its evening and night-time economy.
The town has been accredited for the fourth year running, recognising its continued collaboration with partners to provide a safer night-time economy.
Like the Blue Flag scheme for beaches, Purple Flag areas are singled out for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture for visitors and residents to enjoy.
This year’s award is especially encouraging given how everyone has had to adjust to new ways of working and socialising with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Purple Flag highlights include various exciting and ongoing projects and the creation of a BID improvement sub-committee dealing with history, culture, and arts, promoting a key tourism driver for Weymouth.
Cllr Colin Huckle, Mayor of Weymouth, said: “We are honoured to be awarded the Purple Flag for a fourth year. By flying the flag, this highlights the work Weymouth Town Council and a range of partners – including police, businesses and street pastors – do to ensure this is a place where people can enjoy a safe night out.”
Laura Blake is an Advocacy and Accreditation Assistant at the Association of Town & City Management, the organisation which runs the Purple Flag scheme.
Laura added: “Weymouth has shown that during a time of uncertainty, they have used the Purple Flag process to support businesses and act as a driver for improvement. The numerous exciting and engaging projects in progress, and the focus on recovery and bolstering the unique draw of history and culture that Weymouth has illustrates their success in being awarded their Purple Flag.”
