Weymouth and Portland Armed Forces Day 2013 will welcome veterans, residents and visitors to a packed programme of military and veterans commemorations and celebrations.

Weymouth Pavilion is being used on a one-off basis on 22 and 23 June to accommodate one of the borough’s most prestigious events. The pavilion will be used by event organisers to provide refreshments and facilities suitable for those taking part in the event.

Cllr Ian Bruce, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Tourism and Culture brief holder, said:

“I am delighted that the pavilion will be used on this one-off basis to host the veterans during the weekend. It will provide a central location for the veterans to make sure they are comfortable and looked after properly and will help make sure the event runs smoothly.

“This is an opportunity to show our respect and appreciation to all the hardworking service men and women past and present who have represented our country through the years and I would encourage everyone to come down and join in the celebrations.

“There has been a considerable amount of work and commitment behind the scenes and once again the borough’s fabulous ability to deliver top class events has been truly recognised. I would like to thank the Ministry of Defence for their generous £10,000 donation.”

A grant of £10,000 has been approved by the Ministry of Defence to support the borough’s Armed Forces Day Celebrations which will take place from Saturday 22 to Friday 28 June. Festival highlights will include a service of remembrance, a seafront parade recognising the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, beach assault, military vehicle convoy from Weymouth Esplanade to Castletown on Portland, a flypast by a Lancaster plane and marching and performing bands.
