Weymouth and Portland has always been a popular spot for film makers and many films and TV shows have featured the resort over the years.
Back in the 1960’s one of the most talked about films of the era was filmed in the area and for much of the summer the crew were located in Weymouth.
John Schlesinger’s version of Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd was filmed mainly on location in Dorset in 1965. Starring Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Alan Bates and Peter Finch. This short clip was filmed on Weymouth seafront.
There are others of course, and we’ll bring more to the site in due course. For now site back and enjoy the sight of Weymouth seafront as it was in Victorian times.
Always loved Weymouth, right from being a child in the 50s…..One of our favourite films, spotted it years ago..great film….
In the late 1960s, I rented the house where John Schlesinger stayed while filming the movie. Beautiful location, near Ringstead. When I visited the area a few years ago, I noticed many changes. The quiet road was much more of a highway, and Weymouth seemed very glitzed up from the backwater it used to be.
