John Schlesinger’s version of Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd was filmed mainly on location in Dorset in 1965, a number of scenes were shot in and around Weymouth. These included the circus scenes shot at Coombe Valley and this one shot on Weymouth Esplanade and sands. Other than the beach being much higher these days it doesn’t seem to have changed that much.
The film starred Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Alan Bates and Peter Finch and was a huge success at the time.
