Weymouth will be transformed by light, sound and performance this September when Dusk Til Dark returns for three evenings of free events across the town.
Running from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th September, this year’s programme will feature installations and activities at locations including Westham Bridge, the Esplanade, Weymouth Beach and the town centre.
At the heart of the event will be Wave, an internationally touring installation by artists Squidsoup, presented in partnership with Activate Performing Arts.
Five hundred illuminated orbs will be suspended above Westham Bridge to create the form of a breaking ocean wave, filling the area with changing patterns of light and sound each evening from 6pm to 10pm.
Each orb contains its own LED lights, speaker and microcomputer, with the 500 interconnected units using Internet of Things technology to create an ever-changing experience for people walking beneath the installation.
Wave will also provide the setting for a series of activities during the weekend. Yoga and creative drawing sessions are planned beneath the installation on Friday and Saturday, while dancers from Activate’s Dorset Youth Dance and The Remix groups are due to perform on Saturday evening.
Elsewhere, Dusk Til Dark will spread across Weymouth with a laser light show on the Esplanade on Friday and Saturday evenings, a sound bath broadcast through the beach speakers and illuminated artwork created by Coastland College students displayed on the balcony of the New Vic Hotel.
Further light and sound displays are planned in shop windows throughout the town centre, along with a ribbon sound flow experience from Coastland College.

With multiple sound, light and interactive installations across the town, attendees will be immersed in a cultural journey that showcases Weymouth at its most creative.”

Dusk Til Dark has become a regular feature of Weymouth’s cultural calendar, with previous events bringing large-scale light, sound and participatory performances to the town’s streets, harbour and beach.
Wave will be illuminated on Westham Bridge from 6pm to 10pm each evening from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th September. All Dusk Til Dark events are free and suitable for all ages.
