To mark the anniversary of  VE day a free VE Picnic will be held at the borough council-run Easton Gardens, Portland on Saturday 9 May from 11.30am to 4pm.

There will be a display of historic military vehicles, military memorabilia, music from the era plus lots of great family fun, including a ‘VE trail’.

Bring along a picnic, support the local shops and cafes, relax and enjoy entertainment provided by:

  • Weymouth Concert Brass
  • Bittersweet Harmony and the Carefree Choir
  • Sing A long
  • The Decadettes
  • War time Sing a Long with Rick Winterburn

The VE Picnic has been organised by the Borough Events Team to mark this important national commemoration. The success of these special Borough commemoration events is due to the enthusiasm and support of the many local people who wish to remember the outstanding contribution that veterans have made to safeguard our nation.

Matt Ryan, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Tourism and Events Manager said: “I am delighted to announce the programme for the 70th anniversary of VE day at Easton Gardens on Portland.

“It is important that we take time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our armed forces and many civilian organisations and to remember those who gave so much for our freedom.”

Preparations are also underway for Weymouth and Portland’s major Armed Forces Day Celebrations, supported by the Ministry of Defence and organised by the Borough Council’s events team, which this year takes place between 20 June and 26 June.

This year’s celebrations will honour Britain’s armed forces of the past, present and will feature:

  • A major seafront veterans parade
  • Military themed re-enactment display on Weymouth Beach
  • Military vehicle displays and convoy
  • Military marching band performances.
