The Stylistics are a renowned American soul group that emerged during the early 1970s, contributing to the smooth and romantic side of the Philadelphia soul sound. The group’s harmonious vocals and timeless ballads have made them a staple in the world of R&B music.

Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1968, the original lineup of The Stylistics included lead vocalist Russell Thompkins Jr., Herbie Murrell, Airrion Love, James Smith, and James Dunn. The group’s distinct sound was characterized by Thompkins’ falsetto, which added a unique and captivating element to their music.

In 1971, The Stylistics signed with Avco Records, and they quickly found success with their debut self-titled album, featuring hits like “You’re a Big Girl Now” and “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart).” Their sophomore album, “Round 2,” continued their success with songs like “I’m Stone in Love with You” and “Betcha by Golly, Wow,” which became iconic classics.

Throughout the 1970s, The Stylistics continued to release a string of hits, including “You Are Everything,” “Break Up to Make Up,” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” Their emotionally charged lyrics, impeccable harmonies, and romantic themes resonated with audiences, making them a beloved group in the world of soul music.

Despite changes in the lineup over the years, with Russell Thompkins Jr. eventually leaving the group, The Stylistics continued to perform and record, maintaining their status as a prominent soul act. Their enduring legacy has inspired countless artists and continues to influence the R&B genre.

The Stylistics’ music has stood the test of time, and their contributions to soul and R&B music remain cherished by fans old and new. Their smooth, heartfelt ballads have left an indelible mark on the music world, ensuring that The Stylistics will always be remembered as one of the quintessential groups of their era.
