This summer, Weymouth Harbour will host a remarkable maritime event: the arrival of the Nao Santa María, a full-scale replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship from his 1492 voyage. From July 30 to August 3, 2025, visitors can explore this iconic vessel and immerse themselves in a pivotal moment of world history.
⚓ About the Nao Santa María
Constructed in 2018 by the Fundación Nao Victoria in Punta Umbría, Spain, the Nao Santa María is a 200-ton, 28-meter-long replica of the original carrack that led Columbus’s expedition across the Atlantic. Built using traditional shipbuilding techniques combined with modern safety standards, the ship features four masts, five sails, and multiple decks crafted from iroko and pine wood.
She serves as a floating museum, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back into the 15th century and experience the vessel that played a crucial role in connecting two worlds. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a maritime aficionado, or looking for an educational family outing, this event promises an unforgettable journey through time.
⚓ What to Expect on Board
Visitors will embark on a self-guided tour across the ship’s four decks, encountering:
• Historical Exhibits: Informational panels detailing the ship’s history and its role in the Age of Discovery.
• Authentic Artifacts: Ornamental elements and replicas of navigational tools from the 15th century.
• Crew Interaction: Opportunities to converse with the crew and gain insights into the lives of sailors from over 500 years ago.
This immersive experience offers a tangible connection to maritime history and the challenges of transatlantic exploration.
