Ministry of Defence Awards £10,000 to Support Weymouth’s Armed Forces Weekend 2025 Celebrations
Weymouth Town Council has been awarded a generous £10,000 grant from the Ministry of Defence to help fund this year’s Armed Forces Weekend celebrations, one of the South Coast’s most anticipated summer events. Taking place over three days—Saturday 21st, Sunday 22nd, and Monday 23rd June 2025—this annual celebration honours our military personnel, past and present, and brings together the community in a powerful display of pride and remembrance
The funding will support a packed programme of events that includes:
- Parades and a moving remembrance service on Sunday
- Marching bands and military vehicle displays, including a convoy along the seafront
- Live music across the weekend, with performances spanning multiple eras to entertain all generations
- A special highlight for this year—a scheduled Spitfire flypast at 11am on Sunday 22nd June, after which the official service will commence
Each year, Weymouth’s Armed Forces Weekend draws thousands of visitors to the town, making it one of Dorset’s largest and most popular free events. It’s a chance to pay tribute to veterans, serving personnel, and the families who support them, while enjoying a vibrant weekend by the coast.
The support from the Ministry of Defence reinforces the significance of the event not only to the local community but also on a national level. Weymouth Town Council, alongside local veterans’ associations and community groups, is working hard to ensure Armed Forces Weekend 2025 is as impactful and inclusive as ever.
Whether you’re a local resident, a visiting family, or a history enthusiast, Weymouth Armed Forces Weekend 2025 is an event not to be missed. Keep an eye on our What’s On in Weymouth Armed Forces Weekend 25 page and Weymouth Town Council website for the full schedule as more details are announced.
Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, who will lay a wreath at Sunday’s service, said: “We are honoured to learn that the Ministry of Defence has awarded Weymouth’s flagship Armed Forces Weekend a generous grant of £10,000. This will be used to help stage this prestigious event which attracts so many residents and visitors to come out onto the streets of Weymouth to honour our armed forces – past, present, and future.
“As we continue the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day 80, we look forward to welcoming veterans and their families to the town, and I’m sure the hotels and guest houses will be full with people who come from all over to recognise and support the incredible work that our Armed Forces personnel continue to contribute to our country.”
Cllr Joanna Dickenson, Weymouth Town Council’s Armed Forces Liaison, added: “We are thrilled to have a spitfire flypast confirmed – subject to weather and serviceability – on Sunday 22nd June, just before our annual service and parade. There’s nothing quite like the roar of a spitfire merlin engine, so look to the sky at 11am to see the pilot fly in from the Pavilion end of the beach to the Weymouth Cenotaph and in reverse. It should be a spectacular moment to cherish.”
