Its no coincidence that Weymouth’s most popular period as a seaside resort runs parallel with the heyday of British Rail.

The railway opened up coastal resorts like Weymouth as destinations for the masses  with regular excursions bringing thousands of holidaymakers to the resort on seaside excursions.

Nowadays demand for the opportunity to experience those great days of steam trains is at a peak and  heritage seaside excursion trains run regularly into Weymouth bringing railway enthusiasts to the town for a few hours to enjoy the resort just as they would have in the past.

This summer The Railway Touring Company has a number of Weymouth Seaside Express excursions planned running from Bristol Temple Meads to Weymouth and also some Dorset Coast Express excursions running from London Victoria to Weymouth. At the time of writing (24 July 2013) we hear some of these may be cancelled due to fire precaution restrictions in the current hot weather from Network Rail so best to check website for latest news.

When these trains arrive in Weymouth there are some superb viewpoints from which to see and photograph them. Our thanks to local photographer Ian Brooke for letting us use these pictures of steam trains taken at various viewpoints around Weymouth.
