This July, Nothe Fort will host the remarkable textile exhibition The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War, an 80 metre knitted and crocheted installation exploring the social history of Britain during the Second World War.
Running throughout July 2026, the exhibition offers visitors a visually striking and immersive journey through wartime Britain.
Following the success of the original The Longest Yarn, which depicted the D Day landings, this new exhibition continues the project’s mission of bringing history to life through large scale handcrafted textile art.

The installation features eighty intricately created panels illustrating life between the outbreak of war on 3 September 1939 and VE Day in 1945. Scenes depict many aspects of wartime life including rationing, evacuees, the Blitz, community resilience, and iconic moments in Britain’s wartime story.
Visitors will also encounter the life sized “Army of Duty Calls” figures, handcrafted to honour those who served both on the home front and the front lines.
