This July, Nothe Fort will host the remarkable textile exhibition The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War, an 80 metre knitted and crocheted installation exploring the social history of Britain during the Second World War.
Running throughout July 2026, the exhibition offers visitors a visually striking and immersive journey through wartime Britain.
Following the success of the original The Longest Yarn, which depicted the D Day landings, this new exhibition continues the project’s mission of bringing history to life through large scale handcrafted textile art.

The installation features eighty intricately created panels illustrating life between the outbreak of war on 3 September 1939 and VE Day in 1945. Scenes depict many aspects of wartime life including rationing, evacuees, the Blitz, community resilience, and iconic moments in Britain’s wartime story.
Visitors will also encounter the life sized “Army of Duty Calls” figures, handcrafted to honour those who served both on the home front and the front lines.
Events Coordinator for Nothe Fort, Connie Jenkins-Teague, said:
“We’re delighted to be hosting The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War. Bringing this story to Weymouth, and into the heart of Nothe Fort with its own wartime heritage, makes this exhibition especially meaningful.
All eighty panels will be displayed throughout the Fort alongside our World War Two displays, creating a unique experience for visitors.
We are also grateful for the support of local knitting groups such as the Knitwits and Knit and Natter groups, who are making bunting for the route around the Fort. If you have a textile hobby and would love to get involved as a Woolly Steward for the exhibition, we would love to hear from you.”
Entry to the exhibition is included with standard admission to Nothe Fort and is free for Annual Pass holders.
Alongside the exhibition, visitors can explore the Fort’s many historic features including the ghost tunnel, Victorian gun deck, WW2 gun emplacements, underground nuclear bunker, and panoramic views across Weymouth Bay and the Jurassic Coast.
