Residents and visitors are invited to join an uplifting afternoon of singing and music-making as SongFest takes over the Ocean Room at Weymouth Pavilion on Sunday 27 July 2025, 1.30pm to 5.30pm.

Hosted by The Quangle Wangle Choir and supported by Portland & Weymouth Towns of Culture 2025, SongFest is an inclusive harmony singing workshop open to everyone, from nervous newcomers to seasoned singers. Led by acclaimed workshop leader Dan Pate of the Bristol Riff Raff Choir, the event promises to unite voices and create a joyful, powerful sound together.

Dan Pate brings a wealth of experience in a cappella singing, and his accessible approach means no need to read music – songs will be taught by ear, with word sheets provided and some optional sheet music for those who want it.

The afternoon includes:

A two-and-a-half-hour harmony singing workshop

A sociable tea break

A short performance from local choirs including The Quangle Wangle Choir, Wacapella, Live Wire Choir, and others
Juliet Harwood, organiser of SongFest and director of The Quangle Wangle Choir, said: “Singing together is one of the most rewarding ways to connect with others and feel part of something bigger. SongFest will be a welcoming, creative space for everyone, whether it’s your first time singing or you’re a regular chorister. We hope people leave inspired to keep singing, whether that’s joining a local choir or simply enjoying music in their lives.”

Councillor Carralyn Parkes of Portland Town Council and Councillor Alex Fuhrmann of Weymouth Town Council – nominated representatives on the Portland & Weymouth Towns of Culture project board said: “It’s exciting to see SongFest inviting people of all ages and abilities to take part in such a vibrant, communal event. This kind of activity shows how culture can reach everyone – sparking creativity, confidence and connection across our towns.”

Tickets are £10 for adults and £3 for accompanied children, available through the Weymouth Pavilion box office (weymouthpavilion.com or 01305 783225).

SongFest is part of the Towns of Culture 2025 Reveal Launchpad programme, which supports community-led cultural activities in Portland and Weymouth. The event is sponsored by Nantes Solicitors and the Towns of Culture initiative.
