Work on the next phase of Dorset Council’s plans to enhance Weymouth’s harbourside will begin on 3 November, marking another major step in the ongoing regeneration of the town’s waterfront.

The 20-week improvement programme, due to finish in April 2026, will focus on creating more space for pedestrians to enjoy the harbourside while improving the appearance and accessibility of the North Quay development site — a move expected to make the area more appealing to potential investors.

During the works, one lane of North Quay will be closed, allowing traffic to travel only from the ASDA junction towards the Town Bridge or Trinity Road. Access to North Quay car park will remain unchanged, although motorists leaving the car park will no longer be able to turn left.

The temporary changes are also expected to affect local bus services, and passengers are advised to check with their operator for up-to-date travel information.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said:

“We are building on the success of the Custom House Quay improvements to make walking and spending time around the harbourside as pleasant as possible.

“These improvements are part of a much larger plan to reinvigorate Weymouth.

“The closure of one lane will mean that people may be inconvenienced either driving or using buses, so I ask that you double check for any changes to your routine during this time.”

The scheme is being funded through the Local Transport Plan, with additional support from Government funding awarded to Dorset Council in 2023 to help regenerate Weymouth’s Waterside Economy.
