The Weymouth Seafront Laser display was launched back in May 2012 in advance of the 2012 Olympic Games being hosted by Weymouth and Portland.

In the months since it’s fair to say they have caused quite a lot of controversy with split opinion between those who see them as a bold statement that Weymouth is moving on into the 21st century and those who have been horrified that they have replaced the fairy lights that had been in place on the seafront for over 60 years.
To be honest here at Love-Weymouth.co.uk we love the lasers and have been impressed by how they can look so different from night to night and the position you view them from.
This is a video we shot of The Veils of Light Weymouth Seafront Lasers very soon after their launch. What do you think of them? We’d love to see your comments …

Sadly they don’t look like the video from the beach . Fairy lights for me. Look at the weldmar walk. All those bright flashing bunny ears looked pretty. Exactly the effect of the fairy lights .
Overhyped, totally dismal unless your at sea, rubbish, waste of money. Not my comments, comments from weymouth residents. I spent August bank hol week there and spent every night of week on esplanade and those lasers that did work projected a few thin beams of green light. Only time they were remotely interesting was in the rain when the odd sparkle caught the eye. But who wants to stand in the rain. Film them from the beach with no posh filters or camera tricks and show how they really look to visitors. Weymouth and Dorset have been duped by the designers it’s not a laser display it’s a few green lights. Put back the fairy lights bring something back for the younger visiter to see. Those I met we’re distinctly unimpressed but then they go to the rock concerts someone mentioned earlier where laser shows are the norm. Maybe a few Weymouth councillors should go to a few they might realise they’ve been done!
Lasers need something to ‘register’ upon – fog, dry ice, smoke even rain.
Had the designers ever been to a Rock’n’Roll show, I ask?
Weymouth beach is historically a ‘clean air’ stage – that’s why it is so popular.
Our only hope is to choreograph Fireworks night (loads of smoke) with some good music and ‘the lasers’ all in sync. Create a SHOW that people will come to experience.
Or, nightly release some smoke/dry ice into the sea off the beach, and then program the lasers to create ‘a teaser matinee show’ for the once-a-week BIG one.
Apart from that, they could be used for curative powers against cancers. Spa Wey?
If all the lasers work and they produced the output that they were supposed to do, and the company who provided them perhaps serviced them, then the display might look better.
Mark.
Only seen on video. It looks boring and not attractive . I feel its a waste of money . Bring back the original lights please before we visit again !!
As a lighting and laser professional, this setup could be so much better.
Feel free to contact me and I would gladly re-engineer this show for free….. :)
