Earlier this year, Weymouth Town Council appointed consultants HemingwayDesign to work on plans to enhance the seafront to make it a year-round destination for everyone to enjoy.
Designer Wayne Hemingway HemingwayDesign provided an update on Weymouth’s emerging Seafront Masterplan on Monday 10th October.
It follows a survey launch in May to gather public opinion which attracted more than 2,200 responses. The data has now been collated and a summary was presented to town councillors, businesses and hoteliers from Weymouth.
Some of the initial ideas to come out of the survey include encouraging more walking and cycling in the resort to improve connections to the seafront from key parts of the town centre. Other suggestions include looking at more opportunities for street food trading, increasing green spaces along the Promenade, and making improvements that would encourage visitors to explore more parts of the seafront to the north of the resort.
The next steps are to develop a full proposal that will go out to public consultation in the coming months, when further details will be shared on how people can have their say.
No decisions have been made at this point.

Tidy up around the shops where it’s looking tired and run down the front is lovely been coming to Weymouth for the last 17 years love the place x.
Get rid of the uni sex toilets not excepted by many people who come to Weymouth
The unisex toilets instantaneously solve the gender issues that are now very prevalent, so KEEP them. There have been ENORMOUS losses of parking spaces IE beside the harbour so further losses are unacceptable. Eating outside is a win for the council as it is a method of gaining higher business rates.
The town center needs help with shopping. So many empty shops! If you made it affordable for traders maybe it would encourage them to open up! The town looks bad
Beach day club provided by operators on other side of road to enhance their offering (so as not to take business away) no one wants closed businesses
Widen promenade and make road one way or or close road from m&s
Fountains along the newly widened pathway and seating areas throughout
Water filling stations
There must still be space for fishing from the piers. For all groups/types.
Not just bicycles..walking ok if people are able.
We must have all kinds of disabled access
Please ensure there are no restrictions on transport, both private and public, along the front. We seem to neglect or try to get rid of the motorists We have enough difficulty moving into and around Weymouth now, don’t make it worse. Many many people are elderly and need their cars. Buses just cannot substitute cars, first not frequent enough, secondly not reliable, thirdly do not cover enough areas, finally prices keep rising. Let’s make more use of the pavilion surround for the community. Need an underpass from kings road to the beach for easy and safe access. Please no cycle lanes, we do not have the room to cut back on road, pavement or sea front promenade. Reduce business rates to encourage small enterprises to prosper. We seem to out-price everything car parking, building rates, etc etc. let’s encourage growth. As an example the seafood festival WAS for everyone, but not now it’s been privatised for profit, charging an entry is wrong, taking it from the harbour was wrong, local businesses did so well during the two days but not now.. let’s get the shops filled again, let’s get the buzz back into the towns shopping areas especially for the rainy days when visitors and local alike need somewhere to go.
