Weymouth & Portland Lions Club, together with Purbeck Motocross Club, are gearing up to stage the annual Motocross event on Weymouth. This high-flying extravaganza over humps and bumps will be held on Weymouth beach on Sunday October 9th with bikes entering the sands from at 12 noon for practise laps. There will also be a demonstration on Saturday 8th October from 3 pm.
Alf Stearn, Chairman of Purbeck Motocross said, “We have more than 300 riders over three different categories expected this year negotiating the usual sandy course of humps and bumps. We are the largest amateur event of its kind in the country, which isn’t bad for a small club with about ten active members.”
There will be three classes of riders taking part this year, Expert, Senior and Junior, with each class having two races on the day. A few professional riders are also expected to take part.Lions President Julie Story said, “Weymouth Beach Motocross first started in 1984 and has been run every year since then except for 2009 when the medical company didn’t turn up & 2020 due to the covid pandemic. It’s a brilliant event for all the family and l urge as many people as possible to come along to see and hear this spectacular event.”

We Are Weymouth wanted to support this event which attracts thousands of spectators and some of the best riders in the world as it provides the business community with a magnificent opportunity to showcase themselves to the visitors arriving here out of season.”
Although the event is free to watch, Weymouth & Portland Lions Club will be encouraging people attending to make charitable donations. Programmes will also be available on the day priced at £3 each and can be purchased from any of the Lions stalls and members situated along the esplanade.
Lion Ryan Hope, Event manager at Weymouth & Portland Lions Club, said, “This is an opportunity for us as a club to raise money for our charity fund, which we can then use for local causes throughout the year. There will also be several commercial and charity stalls along the esplanade with plenty of tasty street food vendors.”
The pavilion carpark is also closed and visitors are advised to use other car parks or alternative methods of travel to the event, Restrictions are also in place on Weymouth beach Saturday 8th October to Sunday to allow the construction of the course and racing at Weymouth Beach Motocross, the beach will re-open once the event has finished and the beach reinstated.
Access to the remainder of the beach remains unaffected and is available to be used for permitted activities including the exercising of dogs.

DORSET COUNCIL has issued a Notice under Section 14 [2] of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984 as amended. All vehicles will be
prohibited from proceeding along part of The Esplanade and part of Custom House Quay, Weymouth (in both directions). It will
come into operation between 0800hrs – 1700hrs on Sunday 9 October 2022. The Notice is valid for a maximum of 5 days.
This Notice is required to facilitate the arrangements in connection with the Weymouth Beach Motocross.
The road fronting Devonshire Buildings will be open for access only.
Traffic will be re-routed through the one-way system around Alexandra Gardens to continue on The Esplanade, or can use Pilgrims
Way for access to Custom House Quay
